Frequently Asked Questions

How much space does a chicken need in a coop?

The standard minimum is 4 square feet of indoor coop space per standard-size chicken, and 10 square feet of outdoor run space. Bantam breeds need 2 square feet indoors. More space always results in healthier, less stressed birds.

How many nesting boxes do I need?

One nesting box per 4–5 hens is the standard recommendation. Hens often share boxes and prefer to lay in the same spot, so you rarely need one per bird.

What is the ideal roost height in a chicken coop?

Roosts should be 18–24 inches off the ground for most breeds, with 8–10 inches of roost space per bird. Place roosts higher than nesting boxes so hens don't sleep (and poop) in the nest boxes.
