Frequently Asked Questions

How much space do I need for beehives?

Each hive needs about 2×4 feet of ground space, but plan for a 10-foot unobstructed flight path in front of each entrance. Face entrances away from walking paths and neighboring properties. Most localities allow beekeeping on as little as a quarter acre with proper placement.

How many hive boxes does one colony need?

A standard Langstroth colony uses 2 deep brood boxes for the queen and brood, plus 1–3 medium supers for honey storage during the nectar flow. Always have an extra super ready before the main flow — adding boxes late causes swarming.

What does a beginner beekeeping setup cost?

Expect $300–$600 per hive for new equipment plus $150–$400 for one set of beekeeper gear (suit, veil, gloves, smoker, hive tool). Buying used equipment saves money but check for signs of American foulbrood before purchasing.
